Especially for our customers in the West Midlands and North West, here’s a cracking main line steam tour featuring 60163 ‘Tornado’ throughout, on a 400 mile itinerary packed with excitement.
Our destination is the Border City of Carlisle, travelling north via Shap Summit and returning via the spectacular Settle & Carlisle Line – two challenging routes through the Cumbrian Hills.
On the outward journey we head north from Crewe, pausing at Preston for water before tackling the gruelling climb to Shap Summit. We then descend through the glorious Cumbrian scenery to Carlisle where we take a break of over two hours while ‘Tornado is turned and watered. The station is right in the heart of the city, close to the cathedral and the pedestrianised shopping centre.
Back on the train after our break we join the Settle and Carlisle Line and climb gently through the picturesque Eden Valley to Appleby. But the best bit is yet to come; ahead of us is the famous ‘mountain section’ of the S&C. We take the climb to Ais Gill Summit by storm then run along the gloriously scenic section of the route, through Dentdale to the line’s second summit at Blea Moor.
The wonderful views continue as we pass slowly over Ribblehead Viaduct and run through Settle to Hellifield. Here we take a right turn, following the Ribble Valley through Blackburn (where we have another water stop) and rejoin our outward route just south of Preston.
This tour is promoted by The A1 Steam Locomotive Trust with UK Railtours acting as ticket agents. All profits will go towards keeping Tornado on the main line in future years.
