The King Alfred

Saturday 10 February 2018

This is another main line steam circular tour, especially for those looking for a day out without the early start or late finishing times which turn so many other steam trips into something of an endurance test!

Once again the magnificent Merchant Navy Pacific 35028 ‘Clan Line’ is in charge throughout. With St Valentine’s Day just a few days away and the evenings opening out so we see the whole route in daylight, this is an ideal opportunity to break out from the winter blues.

Departure will be from London Victoria, leaving the capital by way of Longhedge Junction, Clapham Junction, Staines and Virginia Water. After a pick-up stop at Woking we journey down the London & South Western Main Line, through Basingstoke, Winchester and Eastleigh.

After a brief water stop at Hedge End our circular tour continues through Fareham, Cosham and Havant. Here we take the Portsmouth Direct Line – always an interesting route for steam – and take a further water stop at Haslemere. We rejoin our outward route at Woking and retrace our steps to Clapham Junction and London Victoria.

The rostered locomotive for this trip is 35028 ‘Clan Line’ which returned from major overhaul in the summer of 2017. She has already given us some wonderful performances and this trip, on her home territory, will surely be no exception.

Following the tremendous demand for our first shorter day trip, the Wessex Express, we are anticipating a lot of interest and we hope you will be joining us.

All timings are provisional and intended only as a guide.
