The Man of Steel

Saturday 20 October 2018

In the autumn of last year we enjoyed an extensive visit to the Immingham end of British Steel’s operations.  After many months of planning we are delighted to announce that this autumn we will visit the Scunthorpe end of their operations including an extremely rare excursion onto their own railway system.

The internal rail system at Scunthorpe is busy 24hrs a day, seven days a week, so our actual routing will be dictated by other train movements on the day. Needless to say that we are planning to visit areas and terminals which have never seen a mainline passenger train before including a couple of ‘firsts’.

The train is expected to be hauled by DBC Class 66 locomotives whilst on the national network, possibly piloted by British Steel’s own traction whilst on parts of their metals.

This charter presents an extremely rare opportunity for a mainline passenger train to travel right into the British Steel Scunthorpe complex and so we expect this trip to book up very quickly.

Our outward route will be via the East Coast Main Line as far as Newark Northgate, from here the route is via Lincoln, with a reversal at Barnetby. The return route is via Hatfield & Stainforth, rejoining the ECML at Doncaster.

This will undoubtedly be a fascinating trip and we are extremely grateful to British Steel for their generous support of this special charter train.  A donation will be made to their nominated charity.

All timings are provisional and intended only as a guide.
