The Torbay Flyer

Saturday 15 September 2018

This is one of our regular favourites, a special train running right through from Hertfordshire and London to the English Riviera!

Our journey takes us around London by way of Willesden Junction and Acton, then onward via the Thames Valley, Newbury and Exeter. Soon the ‘interesting bit’ begins as we run past Powderham Castle, alongside the delightful Exe Estuary with its pretty fishing boats and views across to the Jurassic Coast and Exmouth. Then it’s along the famous Dawlish Sea Wall, racing through tunnels and cuttings of red sandstone, alongside beaches and coves.

The fine scenery continues as we pass Newton Abbot and our destination is Paignton, where the promenade is a short level walk from the station, the long sandy beaches and the pier which dates from 1879.

Stroll around the harbour with its array of pleasure boats or maybe visit Paignton’s famous zoo. You have five hours at this most relaxing of English seaside resorts, and by coming in late season we should escape the holiday crowds.

Beside Paignton station is the Paignton & Dartmouth Steam Railway, which runs for six miles through stunning scenery to Kingswear where a frequent ferry crosses the estuary to reach historic Dartmouth, awash with vestiges of a proud naval history. The narrow streets abound with intriguing little shops, pubs and cafes. You will be entitled to specially discounted steam train and ferry fares, payable on the day.
