July 9th 1967 was a date that will never be forgotten – the very last day of steam on the Southern Region of British Railways. To mark the fiftieth anniversary of the actual date we present a tour of the South Western Division featuring Merchant Navy Pacific 35028 ‘Clan Line’ throughout.

200432578-001Leaving Waterloo at a civilised hour, we begin with a run down the main line to Salisbury where there will be an opportunity to step off while ‘Clan Line’ takes water. We then continue west through the peaceful Blackmore Vale to Sherborne where you can take a break of over three hours. The ancient market town is famous for its Abbey and many other medieval and Georgian buildings, built from distinctive ochre-coloured hamstone. Sherborne was constituted as a cathedral city around AD 705. The writer Sir Simon Jenkins called Sherborne “the prettiest small town in Dorset”.
Alternatively you can remain on board a few minutes longer and alight at the normally disused ‘down’ platform at Yeovil Junction. This is the headquarters of the Yeovil Railway Centre and you can watch as ‘Clan Line’ is turned on one of Britain’s few full size turntables and prepared for the next leg of the journey. There is plenty to see during our break of just under three hours and refreshments are available.
Leaving Yeovil Junction and Sherborne we retrace our steps as far as Salisbury Tunnel Junction. Here we veer right, heading through Dean, Romsey and Eastleigh, reaching the South Coast before a left turn at Havant. This takes us on to the meandering Portsmouth Direct Line through Haslemere and Guildford, and we rejoin our outward route at Woking to return to Waterloo.
We are pleased to offer all three classes of accommodation on this anniversary train so you can enjoy this special trip even if you do not wish to dine.

All timings are provisional and intended only as a guide.
