This main line steam trip has come about as a result of discussions between the Merchant Navy Locomotive Preservation Society, ourselves and train operators DB Cargo. The idea is to offer a perfect shorter-day steam railtour featuring more civilised start and finish times and lower fares than would feature on a longer itinerary..

We all wanted to be able to offer something more ambitious than the time-honoured (but now rather tired) Surrey Hills trundle, including some opportunities for fast running, but still recognisably a circular tour rather than a visit to a destination. The Wessex Express is therefore all about the simple pleasure of travel by steam train. It is intended primarily as a dining excursion although there will be other seats for those not wishing to partake of the meal service. We are pleased to be able to offer the trip at what we think are very favourable prices indeed

Departure will be from London Victoria, taking an interesting route via Longhedge Junction, Clapham Junction, Staines, and Virginia Water. After a pick-up stop at Woking, convenient for those not wishing to go into London and handy for the M25, the pace quickens as we head west through Farnborough, Basingstoke, Worting Junction and Andover for a brief watering stop at wayside Grateley.

Now in Wiltshire we skirt Salisbury by way of the Laverstock Loop and soon pass Romsey. The Queen Victoria should be at Southampton on this date so look out for her as we pass Southampton Docks. We then turn inland through the railway town of Eastleigh and historic Winchester and a further pause for water is made at Basingstoke. From here we retrace our outward route to a set-down stop at Woking, then it’s back through the countryside and suburbs to London Victoria.

The rostered locomotive for this trip is the superb Merchant Navy Pacific 35028 ‘Clan Line’. Back from her major overhaul she has already given us some superb performances and this trip should be no exception.

We do hope you and your friends will be giving this new venture a try!
