THE HOLY ISLAND OF LINDISFARNESaturday 30 October 2010
A wonderful autumn adventure taking us almost to the border with Scotland! The stunningly beautiful yet almost deserted Northumberland Coastline holds a hidden gem, the curiously fascinating Holy Island.
On the final day of British Summer Time, before the short evenings begin, our journey takes us via York, Durham and Newcastle, enjoying fine clifftop views over the North Sea as the train approaches Berwick-upon-Tweed where coaches will be waiting for the 25 minute journey that includes the famous tidal causeway.
There is nowhere quite like Holy Island, perched tantalisingly off the coast and cut off by the tide twice a day. Along with the priory around which the village is centred it has come to be regarded as one of the most sacred places in Britain. In 635AD St. Aidan came from Iona and chose to found his monastery on Lindisfarne. The Christian message flourished here and spread throughout the world.
However Holy Island is not only a centre of pilgrimage. Its tranquility, spirituality and scenic beauty attracts visitors to its shores every year.
Also here is the St Aidan's Winery where you can enjoy a free taster of the renowned Lindisfarne Mead and maybe buy a bottle or two to take home. You have some three hours in which to explore, and maybe walk along a further causeway that links the island 'proper' with the rock upon which the gaunt Lindisfarne Castle stands. There are pubs and cafes and all manner of souvenir shops.
The First Class Dining fare includes the Great British Breakfast, morning coffee and a four course dinner. All fares include coach transfer from Berwick to Holy Island and back.
