UK Railtours are excited to announce Newhaven Nonsense, the second of our pair of summertime railtours aboard the 4TC 4-car unit. We are extremely grateful to our good friend Mark Herriott for designing this tour.
The London Transport red-liveried 4TC (Class 438) unit has no motive power of it’s own, so for this tour we’ll be hauled (subject to the usual caveats) by a Class 33 locomotive at one end and a pair of Class 73’s on the other – provided by GB Railfreight.

We begin our day at London Victoria, where we first head via Nunhead and Lewisham to Bromley North before heading back north towards our second pickup at Charing Cross. As we depart we pass through Waterloo East and London Bridge on our way south, taking the South Eastern Main Line via Sevenoaks and following it through Tonbridge to Ashford International. Here we veer right, taking the Marshlink line through Rye to Hastings, where we continue via the East Coastway Line to Eastbourne for a break of around two hours. Take a stroll along the seafront, and maybe grab some fish and chips?
After we depart Eastbourne we head for the former Ferry Port Station of Newhaven Marine now used as a freight terminal. Our route home is west to Brighton before reversing and heading north via Gatwick Airport, Crystal Palace and Herne Hill to our termination at London Waterloo.
Our full routing is expected to be: –
London Victoria – Factory Junction – Nunhead – Lewisham – Hither Green – Grove Park – Bromley North (RM) – Grove Park – Lee Spur – Crayford Spur – Slade Green – Charlton – Greenwich – North Kent East Jn – London Bridge – London Charing Cross (RM) – Waterloo East ‘A’ – London Bridge – New Cross – Chislehurst Reversible Spur – St Mary Cray – Swanley – Otford Junction – Sevenoaks – Tonbridge – Ashford International – Rye – Hastings – Eastbourne.

In honour of our friend Paul and on behalf of both ourselves and GB Railfreight, a proportion of the proceeds from Newhaven Nonsense will be donated to Prostate Cancer UK, along with the money generated from our onboard charity raffle. You can learn more about the charity and the work they do by clicking here. This tour has been a labour of love by people who were close to Paul and we are incredibly grateful to the teams at GB Railfreight and the London Transport Museum for making it a reality.
There is no First Class Dining on this tour. First Class seating is in compartments. Please note there is no buffet car onboard.
