Only Freight Track and Horses

Saturday 11 September 2021

This is an update for our ONLY FREIGHT TRACK AND HORSES charter running this Saturday:

With grateful thanks to DB Cargo, Freightliner and Network Rail we are now able to announce that Westbury Cement Works Sidings and the Highworth branch, along with a sprinkling of Goods Loops, will feature on this tour to replace the late loss of the Tytherington branch.

The Highworth branch is seldom visited and Westbury Cement Works Sidings haven’t seen a passenger train for decades, so be quick and grab one of the last remaining seats now and we’ll see you on Saturday!

UPDATE - WE HAVE ADDED AN ADDITIONAL STOP AT CHELTENHAM SPA ON THE RETURN JOURNEY TO HELP WITH ONWARD CONNECTIONS. CONFIRMED TIME AT CHELTENHAM SPA 18.28

With a nod to the classic British television sitcom Only Fools and Horses, which was filmed in West London and Bristol, we are delighted to offer our customers this special charter train which will circle the white horse county of Wiltshire and run via a number of freight only lines.

This is the second railtour in our 2021 Forgotten Tracks programme designed by our friend Ian Loveday, so we can expect to run over some track that only very rarely sees a passenger train, possibly even with a surprise or two on the day!

We depart London Paddington and head west for a delightful morning run over the Berks and Hants Railway. After a reversal in the Westbury area, a busy railway junction where numerous freight locomotives will be seen, we will arrive in Bristol Temple Meads for a lunch time break of around ninety minutes.

Our exploration of the freight only network continues as we next head for the branch line to Westerleigh which exists to serve a local oil terminal.

Following a very detailed and sure to be fascinating exploration of numerous non-passenger lines and loops, we complete the day with a glorious evening run along the beautiful Golden Valley Line before arriving back at our first set down station after dusk, having enjoyed what is sure to have been a wonderful day out.

Our route is expected to be:

London Paddington p/u – Slough p/u – Reading p/u – Theale – Newbury Racecourse – Westbury Area (rev) – Bath – Bristol Temple Meads (break and rev) – Bristol East (rev) – Dr Days Curve – Bristol Parkway – Yate – Tytherington (rev) – Yate – Westerleigh (rev) – Yate – Cheltenham Spa (rev) – Swindon – Didcot – Reading s/d – Slough s/d – London Paddington s/d

A number of Goods Loops are expected to be covered during the day.

With grateful thanks to both Freight Operating Companies, motive power for this special charter train is expected to be provided by DB Cargo and Freightliner,

Please be aware that for your safety and that of all staff and crew, this railtour will operate in line with government guidelines as they stand at the time of running. This could include, among other measures, the wearing of face coverings at all times (while not eating or drinking) when on board the train, at stations, on road coaches and at off train locations where applicable. Full details of required covid-safe measures will be provided with your tickets approximately two weeks before the trip runs.
