The Aberthaw Farewell

Saturday 28 March 2020

With very grateful thanks to RWE Generation we are delighted to announce a new Forgotten Tracks excursion. This trip provides the final opportunity to visit Aberthaw Power Station and acknowledge the great contribution the power station has made to Wales and our United Kingdom for nearly 50 years.  The power station has already ceased generation and will close permanently just three days after this special charter train departs.

The Aberthaw Power Station loop, which we shall traverse in full, is at the end of its own short branch line.  The line has only seen passenger trains on very rare occasions over the last 50 years which just goes to underline what a rare privilege RWE Generation have afforded us with this visit.

Very much enjoying a Welsh theme, this charter train will also run via the scenic Vale of Glamorgan railway with views across the Bristol Channel and our mid-afternoon break of around an hour will be taken in the capital city of Cardiff.

With this being a Forgotten Tracks trip our route between the two capital cities will see our train venture onto rail lines that require Goods Lines Authority on numerous occasions.  After what is sure to be a fascinating day out we are scheduled to arrive back at our first set down station just as the sun is setting, but for those who wish to stay on-board, the interesting routing continues all the way back to London.

Please be aware that there are special security restrictions in place for Aberthaw.  Full names of all passengers travelling must be submitted with your booking and we request all passengers to carry a valid form of identification on the day (for example passport or photo driving licence).  A number of RWE Generation security staff may travel with us on the day.

Bookings for this charter will close on Friday 15th March 2020.
