The Border Raider

Saturday 13 April 2019

We will set off from the West Midlands, picking up passengers at Tame Bridge Parkway, Birmingham New Street, Wolverhampton, Stafford and Crewe, where No. 60163 Tornado will join the train, before heading north to the famous Settle & Carlisle Railway itself. The route is known as the ‘Long Drag’ because of the steep gradients, and Tornado will be hard at work all the way to the iconic Ribblehead Viaduct and Blea Moor Tunnel.

On the journey we will soar over high viaducts and plunge through deep cuttings as we head through the wild landscape for Carlisle. Passengers have over two hours to enjoy Carlisle, where the station is close to the Cathedral and Carlisle Castle is also within walking distance.

Tornado will then lead us back, taking the direct route along the edge of the Lake District via Shap Summit, the highest point on the West Coast Main Line, before travelling on via Lancaster and Preston, with Tornado leaving the train at Crewe, with the remainder of our journey being diesel hauled.

This tour is promoted by The A1 Steam Locomotive Trust with UK Railtours acting as ticket agents. All profits will go towards keeping Tornado on the main line in future years.

All timings are provisional and intended only as a guide.
