The Christmas Chester Chuffer

Saturday 14 December 2019

Christmas just wouldn’t be complete without a steam train, so why not join us for a wonderful day out to historic Chester.

Our train runs via Coventry to Bescot Yard, where our steam loco awaits. This is booked to be the superb ‘West Country’ class Pacific 34046 ‘Braunton’, one of the Locomotive Services Limited fleet based at Crewe and owned by Jeremy Hosking.

Our steam-hauled itinerary takes us via Wolverhampton, then on past Cosford to Shrewsbury where an array of characterful semaphore signals can be seen, defying the march of progress and still  controlled from the magnificent Severn Bridge Junction manual signalbox, towering high above the tracks.

We head through the peaceful Shropshire countryside, passing Gobowen station which made the news some years ago when schoolgirls took over the running of the ticket office. Look out for the graceful aqueduct at Chirk, parallel to the railway viaduct connecting England with Wales.  The fine scenery continues both before and after the junction town of Wrexham and along Gresford Bank.

We steam into Chester around lunchtime for a break of some four hours. It takes about twelve minutes to walk into the city centre but the walk is level and there is a frequent shuttle bus available to. No city conjures up the feel of ‘Olde England’ quite so convincingly as Chester, with its fine black and white timbered buildings. The River Dee winds its way around the elegant old city and a Christmas market will be taking place, with some seventy chalets huddled around a huge Christmas tree.

During our stay in Chester, 34046 ‘Braunton’ will have been watered and serviced ready for the next stage of our journey, via Beeston Castle to Crewe. Here we say farewell to steam, and our train will soon be on its way back home via Stafford and Rugby.

Dining guests will be in for a real treat on this trip. Breakfast will be enjoyed on the outward journey, followed by morning coffee as we steam around the Welsh borders at Chester. The climax of the day will be a mouthwatering four-course Christmas dinner. A buffet car will be available to non-diners.

We are expecting this Christmas special to be in great demand, so book soon to be sure of your seats!
