UPDATE: Tickets for this tour were sent by email on Friday 19th July. We now have four seats available in First Class, bookable online or by phone on 01438 715050 (Mon to Fri, 10am to 4pm). Standard Class is fully booked.

Our first tour with the 4TC for a few years sees us take the train to the Dean Forest Railway, a four-and-a-half-mile long heritage railway which runs through the beautiful countryside and woodland of West Gloucestershire.

We start the train at Basingstoke in traditional 4TC territory, and with a Class 33 up front we head east to pick up passengers at Woking before a short detour via South London enables us to head west for our third pick up at Clapham Junction.

After departing we head west via Feltham, Wokingham, and Reading with our final pick up at Didcot Parkway. From here a quick run up the Great Western mainline to Swindon where we head northwest via the scenic ‘Golden Valley Line’ to Gloucester.

With wonderful views of the River Severn on the lefthand side we head towards Lydney where we transfer to the picturesque Dean Forest Railway. This preserved railway first started operating to the Forest of Dean in the 1970’s and expanded to its current limit at Parkend in 2005. The 4.5 mile line runs through beautiful woodland and countryside, running at the relaxing pace of a typical country branchline.

We plan to take our own 4TC train north to Parkend for a leg stretch and photo break of around half an hour before heading south to Norchard, the line’s headquarters. Here we detrain for a break of around two hours, ample time to visit the cafe, gift shop and the Dean Forest Railway Museum which specialises in the Forest of Dean and the Wye Valley Railways. Additionally this is the site of the locomotive depot. We expect there to be enough time to allow passengers a ride on a scheduled Dean Forest Railway steam hauled service should they wish to and this is included in the tour fare.

After our break we return to Lydney and across onto Network Rail metals for our home run, following our outward route through Gloucester and Swindon as far as Didcot Parkway for our first set down. From here we head via the Reading West Curve and Southcote Junction to Basingstoke for our second set down. The train then reverses and we follow our initial outbound journey via Woking to set down passengers, continuing through Wimbledon, Tulse Hill and Brixton before terminating at Clapham Junction.

The train will be diesel hauled by 33012, leading the London Transport 4TC. A GBRf class 66 will take over from Basingstoke on the return trip. Please note that on this trip it is not possible to pick up the train at Reading due to pathing constraints.

Your fare on this tour includes passage on the Dean Forest Railway’s scheduled services. Please note first class accommodation is situated in compartments of six seats. There are no First Class Dining or junior fares on this tour. We expect to be able to offer a range of cold drinks and snacks onboard but no hot food or hot drinks will be available.
