The Dorset Maiden

Saturday 24 July 2021

This tour was originally planned to run on Saturday 10th July, but has been postponed following the 4-week pause at Step 3 of the Roadmap out of Lockdown.

We are very proud to launch what will be our first outing since February 2020, and very much hope you can join us on our return to the rails!

Our maiden voyage runs directly from local stations in Hertfordshire, all with plentiful car parking, or you can board at Finsbury Park which offers good connections via the Picadilly and Victoria Lines. Our outward journey takes us around London by way of Camden, Willesden Junction and Kew, and on via Virginia Water, Basingstoke and Winchester. On reaching Southampton there are views of the Docks, after which we roll through the tranquil New Forest to reach our destinations, with around four hours to spend at your choice. Our return journey follows that of our outward.

Bournemouth

Our special train will arrive at Bournemouth station around lunchtime. The seafront is about fifteen minutes walk from the station and offers seven miles of beautiful sandy beach, along with a  varied range of places to visit whatever the weather. Museums, galleries, amusement arcades, mini golf, play parks, beach huts and an oceanarium, they are all here for you to enjoy.

Poole

Minutes after leaving Bournemouth our train will arrive at Poole station which is close to the town centre. There is an easy fifteen minute stroll to Poole Quay. Delve deep into the heart of the Old Town and explore the treasures of the historic quayside, where sea captains and pirates once stood. Look out for tall ships, fishing vessels and luxury Sunseeker powerboats which are manufactured just across the water.  Or just enjoy a drink and a bite to eat in one of the many waterfront cafes, bars and restaurants.

OPTION – COMPTON ACRES

At Poole coaches will be waiting for the short transfer to Compton Acres, one of the finest privately owned gardens in the South of England. Having undergone extensive refurbishment in the past 10 years Compton Acres is now highly regarded as one of the most important historic gardens in the UK.

Comprising a series of classical themed gardens, each providing an attractive and unique variety of ornamental plants from around the world, cared for by a team of professional gardeners.
The gardens are laid out on a circular route, allowing visitor to discover each garden in turn. Highlights include the Grand Italian Garden, a Rock and Water Garden, a Heather Garden and an authentic Japanese Garden which was designed and built by a Japanese architect with many ornaments imported from Japan. There is a cafe and tearooms, gift shop and plant centre on site.

This option must be pre booked. The supplement includes admission and coach transfers from Poole.
