THE END OF THE LINE

Saturday 10th August 2024

In partnership with Sims Metal, Associated British Ports and GB Railfreight, UK Railtours invite you to join us as we go to ‘The End of the Line’.

This very special ‘Off the Beaten Track’ excursion takes us to a location familiar in name to almost all rail enthusiasts but seen by very few; We head to Sims Metal in Newport, one of the world’s leading metals and electronics recycling company.

Our train originates from East Midlands Parkway and customers can join us at their choice of Leicester, Kettering, Bedford, St Albans, Slough and Reading. From here we head down the Berks and Hants line towards Westbury East loop, which takes us north towards Trowbridge and Bath Spa.  We then navigate our way around the outskirts of Bristol before emerging into South Wales via the Severn Tunnel.

After a brief stop at Newport to pick up an additional driver, we head to Alexandra Dock Junction and onto the private infrastructure of Associated British Ports where Sims Metal is located. We expect to traverse the single line adjacent to the North Dock before entering both sidings at the facility.

We then return to Newport before reversal and the short journey to Cardiff where we will enjoy a break of about an hour.

Back on board, we return to Newport but this time we divert through the sidings at Pengam. Our journey home takes us the more direct route along the Great Western Mainline via Swindon to Reading, setting down at each of our pick-up stations.

Our train will be operated by GBRf utilising 2 x class 66 locomotives operating in Top and Tail mode throughout. We would like to extend our sincere gratitude to Sims Metal and Associated British Ports for facilitating access for today’s train and to GBRf for allowing access to Pengam sidings.  All route information is given on a best endeavors basis and is subject to track inspection and condition checks up to and including on the day of the tour.

Sims Metal has been at the centre of the circular economy since 1917. The company has grown to be one of the leading metal recyclers in the United Kingdom, United States, Australia, and New Zealand. Sims Metal is a division of Sims Limited, a world leading, publicly listed, metal and electronics recycling company with over 4,000 employees that operate from more than 280 facilities around the world, 28 of which are in the UK.

Sims Metal buys and processes ferrous and non-ferrous metal from businesses, other recyclers, and the general public. The business invests in state-of-the-art processing and recovery equipment that maximises metal recovery, diverting it from landfill. In 2023 Sims Metal recycled almost 8 million tonnes of scrap metal globally.

The business is strongly committed to sustainability; it is constantly working on reducing emissions across its operations by using 100% renewable electricity. Its long-term goal is to become carbon neutral by 2030 and achieve net zero by 2050. This year, Sims Limited was named The Most Sustainable Corporation of 2024, in the United States, by Corporate Knights.

On behalf of Sims Metal, UK Railtours are proud to be supporting Railway Children, a charity dedicated to providing protection and opportunity for children with nowhere else to go and nobody to turn to. Our onboard raffle will be fundraising for this very worthy cause, and of course donations are always welcome!
