THE GATEWAY GALLOPER

Saturday 23rd March 2024

TIMINGS NOW CONFIRMED!
This railtour is now closed for bookings.

Our first tour of 2024 is a brand-new itinerary for UK Railtours, and the first of our new Off The Beaten Track railtours! The Gateway Galloper provides the opportunity to visit rare freight-only track in the Midlands, and we’re grateful to Mark Herriott for creating the itinerary.

Starting at London Kings Cross with pick ups along the East Coast Main Line, we turn west at Grantham and head to Nottingham and onward to Castle Donington distribution depot (NR limit) where we reverse and visit the East Midlands Gateway freight facility operated by Maritime Transport Limited.

From there, we progress to Burton West Yard where we reverse again before taking a break at Derby of approximately 90 minutes. After the break, the train traverses more freight track with a visit into Chaddesden Sidings before making the short trip into Nottinghamshire and a pass-through of Toton Yard. We reverse on the Mapperley goods branch where we hope to reach at least the NR limit, although negotiations to pass beyond are ongoing. This line is currently being remediated and as such however far we get, this may be the last time anyone does! From there we depart the Toton area via the High Level Goods, returning to Nottingham and Grantham and home via the East Coast Main Line. We expect to be hauled throughout by top ‘n’ tail Class 66 diesel locomotives provided by GB Railfreight.

Along the route we’ll do our best to capture additional rare track, subject to approval of course. UK Railtours are grateful to GB Railfreight, Maritime Transport Limited, Road and Rail Limited, Ward Recycling and DB Cargo for their support in planning this railtour.

First Class Dining includes The Great British Breakfast and a four course dinner. A buffet car is available for those in Standard Class and First Class Non Dining. First Class Dining is not available to or from Nottingham.
