Saturday 7th September 2024

Our very special train provides our passengers with no less than five varied destinations nestled around the Kent coastline. We have something for everyone, family fun at the seaside, steam train rides for enthusiasts and rich culture for those who like to explore archetypical English towns.

The day starts at East Midlands Parkway and we offer pick ups throughout the East Midlands through to Watford Junction. At Acton we exchange our freight locomotive for two GBRf class 73 electro-diesels that were designed in the 1960’s for use in South East England and are still a relatively common sight today, albeit not on passenger trains such as ours.

Our route takes us over the river Thames, through the suburbs of south London and into the Garden of England – Kent. We progress rapidly towards the coastline at Folkestone West where passengers visiting our first optional destination will join coaches for the short ride to the Romney Hythe & Dymchurch Railway.

Off Train Option – The Romney Hythe and Dymchurch Railway

This popular steam railway – which celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2027 –  operates over 21Km between Hythe and Dungeness. Our guests will enjoy a return trip over the full length of the line hauled by one of the railway’s extensive fleet of 15 inch gauge steam locomotives. If you so wish, there will be time to stop off at the busy New Romney station where the railway has extensive facilities and catch a service train back to Hythe. We expect to have over four hours at the railway, arriving around one o’clock in the afternoon.

Off Train Option – Dover Castle

Alternatively, passengers can remain on the train to Dover Priory where a road coach will be waiting to take us to the iconic Dover Castle. Built soon after 1066, this mighty fortress has been the site of royal intrigue and epic sieges and was the centre of the crucial effort to evacuate hundreds of thousands of Allied troops from the beach of Dunkirk. Roam around the Great Tower with its recreated medieval interior and uncover the colourful world of Henry II. Climb to the very top and enjoy amazing panoramic views. We expect to have over four hours here, arriving around one o’clock in the afternoon.

Leisure time at Margate, Whitstable or Faversham
As an alternative to our two organized off train options, you can choose to alight our train at one of these three interesting coastal towns for a visit of around three hours. Please select which town you wish to visit when you book.

Margate offers a timeless English seaside holiday town combining old world charm with 21st Century culture. Perhaps visit ‘Dreamland’ with its vintage fairground rides or build sandcastles on the beach with the kids.

For a more sedate afternoon, remain on the train to the delightful coastal town of Whitstable. Renowned for its oysters, which can be enjoyed at local restaurants, the town has sandy beaches flanking the harbour, where sunbathing, swimming and water sports are popular. The beaches are unique amongst seaside towns in the south-east of England for having no promenade; making them generally peaceful.

Our final destination option is Faversham, the oldest market town in Kent and recorded in the Domesday Book, is bursting with history and located on a winding creek. With an amazing array of independent shops, captivating places to visit, walking and a reputation for fine foods, Faversham is the perfect place to unwind.

First Class Dining includes The Great British Breakfast and a four course dinner. A buffet car is available for those in Standard Class and First Class Non Dining. Supplements for off train options include coach transfer and admission. Please ensure you select your choice of off train option or destination at leisure when you book.
