The Powerful Pennine Panorama

Saturday 12 February 2022

IMPORTANT NOTE: Goods Line Authority has been requested to run on non-passenger metals at the following locations: Northampton, Cliffe Vale, Castleton, Moorthorpe, Leicester and Rugby. And on the day bonus or two may also be provided.
There will be no pay on the day or part fares available on this tour.

This is the first in a new series of special trains designed by our friend Ian Loveday. Named Powerful Panoramas, each of these special charter trains will make a circular trip allowing guests to admire the Great British scenery through the carriage window in the upmost comfort. To add additional interest each trip will offer a combination of high-speed running and some rare non-passenger connections or loops, and each train will be piloted by a powerful freight locomotive for part of the journey. An off-train break in a Great British city will also be provided whilst the train is serviced.

After our pick-up stations between London and the Midlands we continue to head north via the Staffordshire Potteries; an industrial area encompassing the six towns Burslem, Fenton, Hanley, Longton, Stoke and Tunstall that now make up the city of Stoke-on-Trent which became a centre of ceramic production in the early 17th century due to the local availability of clay, salt, lead and coal.

By midday we expect to be passing through the Manchester area before we commence the scenic highlight of our journey; crossing the beautiful Pennine Hills where snow on the high ground is a distinct possibility at this time of year. Commonly described as the ‘Backbone of England’ the region is widely considered to be one of the most scenic areas of the United Kingdom. The North Pennines is designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Is there any better way to spend an afternoon than onboard a train weaving its way through some of England’s finest scenery? We think not!

We will take a mid-afternoon break in the northern city of Leeds whilst our train is serviced. Leeds is a vibrant, contemporary city situated in the very heart of the Great Britain. It has a rich, cultural heritage and is famous for its friendly Yorkshire welcome! The city offers a wide range of pubs and eateries all within easy walking distance of the station. Those who are enjoying First Class Dining may prefer a gentle stroll along the towpath of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal adjacent to the station in anticipation of their delicious dinner that will be served after departure from Leeds.

After an enjoyable break we re-join the train to head south in the low winter sun where Chesterfield’s twisted spire should be visible at sunset before we complete our circuit in the Midlands and then retrace our steps towards home.

There will be no pay on the day or part fares available on this tour. All non-passenger lines are subject to operational considerations.

First Class Dining includes The Great British Breakfast and a four course dinner. A buffet car is available.
