The St Valentine’s Pullman

Saturday 15 February 2020

This tour is now fully booked, but we are keeping a waiting list. Please call the office on 01438 715050 or email to be added to it!

The magical combination of the beautifully appointed Belmond British Pullman and Merchant Navy Pacific 35028 ‘Clan Line’ make this an unmissable luxury day out for you, your partner and your friends.

As befits the time of year, this itinerary is a shorter day, but considerably longer than the well-known Surrey Hills lunch excursion. It is a highly civilised day, with neither an early start nor a late finish. We will have daylight virtually the whole way. Sit back and appreciate the fine scenery of the Chiltern Hills, the rural Thames Valley and the rolling North Downs, With the trees still bare and the daffodils reminding us of the approach of spring, the views from the carriage window will be truly memorable.

Dining is an essential part of a journey on the Belmond British Pullman, with morning coffee and biscuits starting your day off as you get to know your fellow travellers and of course your immaculately presented Pullman stewards. A perfectly chilled glass of Champagne heralds the commencement of a sumptuous five-course lunch served at a leisurely pace as the ever changing scenery slips by.

Your Journey…

The circular tour begins as the train climbs out of London Victoria, crossing the River Thames via Grosvenor Bridge. Passing Greenford and Ruislip, we soon begin our climb through the Chiltern Hills, by way of High Wycombe and Princes Risborough.

As we approach Bicester we veer left, taking a new connection that connects the Chiltern Line with the former Cambridge to Oxford route. The ‘dreaming spires’ of Oxford punctuate the skyline and we stop briefly to take water. The Thames Valley is especially agreeable hereabouts, with pleasure craft cruising peacefully by and idyllic farmland as a backdrop – a very different scene to the same river we saw at Victoria! In due course we reach Reading where we cross to former Southern metals. We continue through Wokingham and the county town of Guildford which is overlooked by its notable 20th century cathedral.

Soon back in open countryside we pause for water at wayside Shalford before heading through the heart of the bucolic North Downs. Before long we are descending through Dorking to Redhill. Here we join the Brighton main line and travel via Croydon to cross the Thames once more and reach London Victoria.

Prices include your reserved seat on the British Pullman, morning coffee and biscuits, Champagne, a five course lunch and your choice of table wine.

Places on this tour can be booked on payment of a deposit of £50 per person, with the balance payable six weeks before the departure date.

On this train there is no ‘table for two’ supplement to pay as parties of two will normally be allocated a table for two without charge.
