UPDATE - Tickets for this tour were emailed on Monday 22nd July. This tour is fully booked.

A very special ‘Off the Beaten Track’ tour designed for the enthusiast combining both heritage and contemporary traction over routes that normally only see multiple units and (subject to track inspection) the added bonus of an exploration of Griffin Wharf (with thanks to Associated British Ports) and a first passenger visit to Brett Aggregates’ Ipswich site. Surely a tour not to be missed?

We start as we mean to carry on…with a very rare loco-hauled departure from London Fenchurch Street. With our class 33 locomotive leading, we take the unusual diversionary route via Gas Factory Jn and Bow Jn to join the Great Eastern Main Line (GEML) prior to our next pick up at the very well connected Stratford station. With further pick-ups at Chelmsford and Colchester we divert from the GEML at Manningtree with the objective of resolving a long held irritation – to take a locomotive hauled train to Harwich Town rather than Harwich International where so many previous charters have reversed.

Track scratched, and now with our class 66 locomotive leading the train, we rejoin the GEML for the short hop to Griffin Wharf. Here, the flexibility of our short train formation is perfectly illustrated as we aim to become the first passenger train to enter the Brett Aggregates siding which has previously proved elusive due to the available length of the head shunt in which we reverse. Please note both destinations remain conditional on our operator approving the necessary track inspection for a passenger train.

Do not be fooled that our day is complete. Far from it – we have plenty more to tempt you with. Locomotive hauled passenger trains rarely visit East Anglian branches so we will put that right and visit Clacton on Sea (where we take a 45 minute break), Walton on the Naze and Colchester Town.

Only now do we head for home after what we hope you agree promises to be a very agreeable jaunt around East Anglia. We take in the Colchester and Shenfield Up Passenger Loops on our way back to Stratford and London Fenchurch Street where our train will terminate.

Our very special thanks to Associated British Ports, Brett Aggregates, GB Railfreight and the 71A Loco Group for assisting us in the arrangements for this tour.

Please note First Class accommodation is situated in compartments of six seats. There are no First Class Dining or junior fares on this tour. We expect to be able to offer a range of cold drinks and snacks onboard but no hot food or hot drinks will be available.
