The Welsh Marches

Saturday 26 February 2022

Our ‘Winter Wonderland’ scenic tours have been popular for many years, providing a fantastic combination of rolling countryside and idyllic scenery with ample time to visit some of the UK’s more picturesque towns and cities. This itinerary is perfect for the shorter days of February, combining fine scenery with a visit to a historic cathedral city.

The Welsh Marches Line links South Wales with England’s North-west, the areas of Monmouthshire, Herefordshire and Shropshire through which the line runs encompassing some of the few remaining truly peaceful backwaters of Britain. All along the way is unspoilt borderland with its big river valleys, tumbling streams and rolling upland, and little signal boxes control trains by traditional semaphore signals.

Our journey is via the North London line to Acton where we join the Great Western Main Line via Swindon and the Severn Tunnel to the outskirts of Newport. We take the Maindee Curve and join the Welsh Marches Line, heading north through Abergavenny to arrive at Hereford for a break of around two and a half hours. The station is only a short walk from the historic High Town, and the graceful cathedral stands proud overlooking the peaceful River Wye.

After our break our journey along the Marches Line continues, passing the historic towns of Leominster and Ludlow. At Shrewsbury we take the Abbey Foregate Curve to avoid the station and head back towards London via Wolverhampton. Darkness falls as we head south along the West Coast Main Line, concluding a highly agreeable scenic journey.
