Today’s journey provides a rare opportunity to visit Portsmouth Harbour behind the magnificent Merchant Navy class steam locomotive 35028 ‘Clan Line’, the first for over 30 years, and all with the incredible hospitality, attentive service and fine dining of British Pullman, A Belmond Train. Relax as you enjoy a full day on this splendid train, the oldest vehicle of which celebrates her hundredth birthday this year, her service life having spanned half the time railways have existed! 

Our train today takes an alternative, longer route both to and from Portsmouth in order to avoid engineering works, giving you ample opportunity to enjoy the opulence of the British Pullman.

Upon departing Victoria a delicious brunch is served with Bellini as we run via Tooting and gain the South-Western Mainline at Wimbledon. Onwards through Woking, Basingstoke and Winchester we trace the route of the famous “Bournemouth Belle”, on which train a number of the British Pullman carriages served over the years. At Eastleigh we leave the mainline and travel via Botley to Fareham and Havant, where our train reverses, to be hauled into Portsmouth Harbour by a Belmond-liveried class 67 diesel for the last eight miles of the outward journey.

In Portsmouth we have around three hours to explore the many sights and attractions on offer. Visit the Spinnaker Tower, revel in the history of HMS Warrior and HMS Victory at The Historic Dockyard or even take a quick trip to the Isle of Wight on the world’s only commercial hovercraft service!

All too soon it will be time for the return journey where a sumptuous four course dinner with wine and Champagne will be served as our return journey unfolds. ‘Clan Line’ will depart from Portsmouth Harbour and the return route is likely to be via Chichester and Hove, the outskirts of Brighton and then up the Brighton mainline to London, famed for the Brighton Belle, the world’s first electrically operated Pullman service, again on which a number of carriages on today’s train served.

Back at London Victoria it will be time to say goodbye to your carriage hosts, our splendid train and locomotive after this rare opportunity to spend a full day on the British Pullman behind steam.
